What is Gallbladder?
Our gallbladder is a pouch like organ located right under the liver. Its function is to store bile produced in the liver. The bile is discharged from the gallbladder into our upper small intestine (duodenum) and is needed to digest food fats.Gallbladder disease is a situation when the flow of bile slows down or gets obstructed.
What are gallstones?
Bile is made of cholesterol, bile salts, and bilirubin, hence when the gallbladder doesn’t work properly, those elements of the bile get out of balance forming solid crystals hence leading to gallbladder disease. The majority of gallstones are made of cholesterol, the rest are colored stones that contain bilirubin. Stones can be small or large, in single or multiple quantities. Gallbladder symptoms are result of the dysfunctional gallbladder and gallbladder disease occurs when when stones block off the cystic or common bile duct.
